Chubb Trail Running Routes

Chubb Trail Description:
Unlike it’s more popular neighbor, Castlewood Park, Chubb Trail does not get the same usage as Castlewood and that is one of it’s charms.  This is a point to point trail, approximately 7 miles one way, with parking either at the entrance of Lone Elk Park or at West Tyson Park, both in west St. Louis County.  Beginning at the Lone Elk side, you immediately head down the hill to the beginning of a long, flat run along and near the Meremec River.  You can add another 3 or so miles by taking advantage of the flat Castlewood Loop, so named as it is owned by Castlewood State Park but is across the river (and inaccessible) from Castlewood State Park.   Heading towards West Tyson Park, you cross the railroad tracks (for the second time) and almost immediately begin heading uphill.  Once you reach the picnic bench (Mimi’s Bench), there are two options, the longer route that leads to the West Tyson Picnic shelter and a slightly shorter route (Flint Quarry Trail) that leads to the lower parking area of West Tyson.  This portion of the running route is heavily used by mountain bikes – there is very loose gravel on parts which can make climbing the hill a bit of a challenge.

Chubb Trail offers a great feeling of a wild and scenic run, but is within 15 minutes of the intersection of 1-44 and 1-270.  Eagles abound in the winter months and the route’s proximity to the Meremec River allows for beautiful river views and a great run, no matter the season.  The hills are challenging but worth the effort.  After a rain or melting snow, the running route can be very muddy in parts.  If the Meremec floods, the lower part of the running route can be under water. This is a multi-use trail open to mountain bikes, hikers, runners and horses.

Google Maps

To reach the Lone Elk side of Chubb Trail, take 1-44 West to north 141.  Immediately after exiting the highway, look for the sign to turn right to Lone Elk Park.  Take the outer road to the park entrance (don’t enter the park itself), and you will see the parking areas right at the route entrance.

To reach the West Tyson side of the running route, take 1-44 west to Lewis Road.  Once exiting the highway, turn right and you will see a very small entrance to West Tyson Park on the right side of the road.  If you go as far as the stop sign, you’ve gone just a little too far.
